Advantages of providing earthing to electrical system
Earthing is one of important aspect of electrical system because of below.
- Earthing protects electrical components from any damage due to excessive current flowing through circuit.
- Earthing protects humans and other living things from electric shocks. In cases of surges in the voltage, high voltages can pass through the electricity circuit. These kinds of overload can lead to damaging of electrical devices and also danger to human life. When proper earthing is installed with the electrical installations, the current is routed through a different path and risk is avoided.
- Leakage current may results risk of fire. This risk of fire can be prevented by doing proper earthing. In short earthing provides the simple path to flow of leakage current.
Types of earthing:
Based on two non current caring parts in electrical system i.e neutral of a system and metallic frame or parts of electrical equipment earthing system can be classified as below.
- Neutral earthing
- Equipment earthing
Neutral earthing:
Neutral earthing or system earthing, the neutral of system is directly connected to ground. Such type of earthing is provided in star connected equipment like transformers, motors etc.
Equipment earthing:
In this type of earthing the metallic parts of electrical equipment are connected to earth electrode. If any fault occurs in the apparatus, the short-circuit current passes to the earth, thus protecting system and personal from any damage.

If there is proper earthing system provided for electrical system . And When the fault occurs the fault current from the equipment flows through the earthing system to the earth and thereby protect the equipment from the fault current. Thus protecting the personal and electrical system from any damage. Below picture is shown for clarification.
